The stage was all set. Every preparation was made to the point and with extreme finesse. The drawing room was adorned with aesthetic surroundings. The glasses were polished to the last blot. All the exotic drinks were placed on top of wooden bar. The room was filled with floral aroma. And yes, we were all dressed up and waiting for the guests, the special guests to arrive.
This December, we had a special reason to smile. Nikita was going to embark a new journey of her life. This 26th she got engaged to Nimit. Nimit, the name that means 'Destiny' (as per http://www.babynology.com/meaning-nimit-m30.html), belong to Delhi and is working in Infosys (now you know why I am specially attracted to him..!!!). I sometimes wonders, all Mathurs and Infoscions are inter-related in some way or other. Each family has atleast one member working in Infosys. Last month Infosys declared it’s quarterly results that were…err…ok ok, sorry to digress from the topic.
Nimit was accompanied by his small and cute family. He was smiling formally, and sometimes cracking good jokes too..!! It reminded me of my day last year, when I was best at my confidence level during the ceremony…!!! Yes, the trailer always has to be good, entertaining and noteworthy. That’s why engagement photographs are much better than the marriage ones (If Nimit is reading this blog: Don’t go by my words. Stay like the way you are). Anyways these are the celebrations, and stand the every reason to enjoy.
Finally the rings (special comment from my wife: “very pretty”) were exchanged accompanied with shower of petals and chanting of our family anthem “very good bhai very good bhai very good bhai waah..!!” We are spreading this tradition to each nook and corner even if one finds this awkward… ‘who cares’
Now it was the time for the dinner. It was the first time that this house was flooded with so many non-veg servings. There were 3 kinds of people present in the party. One, the anti-non-veg junta, who were bogged down with the fragrance of chicken ‘handi’ over universal ‘kofta’ and ‘dum-aloo’. I could count very few of them. Second category belongs to the people who were once fond of non-veg, but now follow 'Meneka Gandhism'. The reason could be growing age or inflation within body. The last category belong to the non-veg junta for whom it doesn’t matter whether it is chicken or mutton enclosed within the gravy after 2 shots of drinks…!!! There is one different category too which I forgot to mention: my own dear wife, whom I call pseudo-non-veg eater. She doesn’t like the flesh, but is very fond of its gravy and can handle the flesh in minced form…uff..!!! Anyways the food was impressive or the let-down, this feedback is still with Nikita.
We had couple of more photo sessions with engaged couple along with/without family members (and/or), relatives, (and/or) cousins etc, in many directions. Especially this occasion was a reality check for me and papa to see how we can fair better on our formalities and negotiation skills before the final show at marriage. For instance: offering the best of whisky to the guests and obliging self with a sip of Coca-cola, serving the dinner and wishing for chicken curry to last till our time comes.
But whatever I had experienced that day will remain with me for the rest of my life. Every moment I felt that my family is just getting bigger, strong and prosperous. Now I have more phone calls to make, have more reasons for celebrations and more individuals to meet and interact. What more can I ask from HIM…!!! (All these thoughts were pondered over while I was cleaning the empty dishes in the sink at 2 AM..!!)
God bless the lovely couple and give us more reasons to celebrate…
